Grade
3 Poetry Residency with Steve Swinburne
Maloney
Interdistrict Magnet School 2003 - 2004
Goal:
To write, revise, and work with a poem over time.
Prior
to Steve’s arrival, in a Science class
with the classroom teacher, students chose an
animal and researched it for a report. This animal
was then the topic of their poetry.
Steve
came for 3 consecutive days:
- In his first two
classes, Steve introduced the idea of strong
sense words, simile, metaphor, verbs, details,
and alliteration. The Tool Bag #1 & #2 worksheets
were given to students to write down ideas that
applied to their animals.
- In his 3rd class,
Steve helped students take the ideas from their
work sheets and use them to create a poem. This
was a rough draft which the students would revise
and expand.

The
next phase consisted of 3 Revising lessons taught
by the Language Arts teacher:
- Day1: Model how
to revise a poem. See ‘Poem to Edit’.
- Day 2: Introduce
the Self-Assessment guidelines (see handout)
with criteria established by Steve. Model how
to apply it to a poem with these guidelines in
mind. Then each student fills out a self-assessment
sheet, applying it to his/her poem.
- Day 3: Students
revise and rewrite their poem (with teacher guidance
as needed) for aspects of the self-assessment
list.
Note:
Each of the above lessons was preceded with a
review of the 6 elements of the Tool Bag.

Steve
returned for 3 more classes for the final revision
lessons:
- Day 1: Show students
how to revise their poems so that most lines
don’t start with “I”.
- Day 2: Tweak and
do final revisions before copying it to a final
draft. Students practice reading their poems
aloud.
- Day 3: Poetry Celebration
Program with parents invited for students to
read their poems.
